On the Nature of Heroism

by E E Murray

What is a hero?
It’s someone who helps,
When the world makes you want to
Scream, shout and yelp.

When the clouds start to gather
And dull down your day,
Your hero’s a breeze
That blows them away.

When your world’s a dark place,
With no hope in sight,
Your hero’s a candle
Providing some light.

When you’re stuck in the gutter –
Sad and downbeat,
Your hero’s the kindly hand
That helps you to your feet.

And when your cares race ahead
And you’re lagging after,
Your hero might just be a joke,
Your saviour could be laughter.
